Entry and Exit Requirements

  • Are there COVID-related entry requirements for U.S. citizens? Yes
  • The Tanzania Ministry of Health released “Travel Advisory #11” effective September 15, 2022, with updated entry and exit requirements for travelers to mainland Tanzania.
  • The Zanzibar Ministry of Health released “Travel Advisory #11” effective August 12, 2022, with updated entry and exit requirements for travelers to mainland Tanzania.
  • Is a negative COVID-19 test (PCR and/or serology) required for entry? Yes
    • Fully vaccinated travelers will be exempted from RT-PCR and Rapid Antigen Test requirements.
      • Travelers will be required to present a valid vaccination certificate with QR code.
      • The only accepted vaccines are those approved by the United Republic of Tanzania and the World Health Organization.
      • Fully vaccinated means the complete administer dose(s) of the vaccine as prescribed by the manufacturer and approved by the World Health Organization.
      • Travelers may be able to generate a QR code through services such as Global Haven:  https://globalhaven.org.
    • Not fully vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers will be required to present a negative COVID-19 Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) or Nucleic Acid Amplification Test (NAAT) certificate with QR code obtained within 72 hours before departure.
    • Not fully vaccinated and unvaccinated travelers may be tested for COVID-19 by Rapid Antigen Test at their own cost (USD $10 or TZS 23,000 in mainland Tanzania and $25 or TZS 58,000 in Zanzibar).
    • Children 12 and under are exempt from testing requirements.
  • Are health screening procedures in place at airports and other ports of entry? Yes
  • All travelers entering Tanzania will be subject to enhanced screening for COVID-19.

Quarantine Information 

  •  Are U.S. citizens required to quarantine? No
  • There is no quarantine requirement except for travelers who test positive upon arrival.
  • Asymptomatic travelers who test positive upon arrival shall be subjected to mandatory quarantine at their own cost at designated places under strict surveillance procedures until they test negative using an RT-PCR test or are evaluated by public health experts as non-infectious.
  • Symptomatic travelers who test positive upon arrival will be isolated for treatment at designated health facilities until they become asymptomatic. They will then be transferred to designated places for quarantine until they test negative using an RT-PCR test.
  • Travelers subject to mandatory quarantine are responsible for all costs associated with the quarantine, including hotel and treatment fees.

COVID-19 Testing

  • PCR and antigen tests are available for U.S. citizens.
  • Rapid antigen tests are available for departing travelers on a walk-in basis at the international airports, including Terminal 3 of the Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro International Airport, and Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar. Travelers planning to use an airport rapid test should arrive multiple hours early and contact the airport for additional information.  Airports might require travelers to test within six hours of their scheduled departure.  The cost for a rapid test is $10 in mainland Tanzania and $25 in Zanzibar. Travelers taking an airport rapid test from the mainland should register through https://afyamsafiri.moh.go.tz and list both their origin and destination as Tanzania in the system.
  • U.S. citizens can book a COVID-19 PCR test through the Tanzanian Ministry of Health (MoH) website: https://pimacovid.moh.go.tz/#/booking.  Travelers in Zanzibar can book through the Zanzibar MoH website:  https://mohz.go.tz/eng/.  COVID-19 test costs vary but are generally between $50 and $200.
  • The MoH states that you will receive a text message with a link to your COVID-19 certificate when your results are ready.

COVID-19 Vaccine Information:

  • Are vaccines available in Tanzania for U.S. citizens to receive? Yes
  • Tanzanian citizens and non-citizen residents age 18 and over are eligible for vaccination.
