A native of Lancaster, PA., Jay Zimmerman received an Undergraduate Degree in American History and Literature from Juniata College and a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Prior to joining the Department of State, he worked as a bookstore manager, energy efficiency consultant, waiter, apprentice bookbinder, group home manager for young adults, Peace Corps Volunteer (Benin, 1984-88), a migrant farmworker/rural health clinic outreach worker in Florida and North Carolina, and a Country Director for the NGO Save the Children in Rwanda, Ethiopia, Somalia, Afghanistan and Kenya.
He began his State Department career in 2002, serving in Chad (GSO), Haiti (Consular Officer and S/GSO), PRM Washington and Kenya (Iraq Refugee Coordinator and East/Southern Africa Refugee Admissions Coordinator, respectively), Afghanistan (INL Deputy Director), and AF/EX (Supervisory Post Management Officer).
He arrived in Tanzania in July 2015 for a three year tour as the Management Officer. His wife and two daughters have elected to remain in the US for this tour.
