U.S. Embassy Dar es Salaam fosters mutual understanding between Americans and Tanzanians through a multitude of academic and professional exchange programs.  These highly competitive programs aim to identify current and future leaders who will go to the United States or come to Tanzania with an open mind and commit to returning to their host country to share what they have learned with their fellow citizens.  These exchange programs are open to a variety of profiles including students, researchers, academics, business people, civil society activists and professionals.

  • The Fulbright African Senior Research Scholarship Program
    The Fulbright African Research Scholar Program (ARSP) offers two types of grants to African Scholars: Research Grants and Program and Curriculum Development Grants.The Research Grant: Awards of three (3) to nine (9) months offered for African university faculty or research institute professionals to conduct research in any academic discipline at a U.S. academic or research institution.Program and Curriculum Development Grants: Awards of three (3) to five (5) months offered for African university faculty or administrators to conduct research in any academic discipline at a U.S. academic or research institution.
  • The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence Program
    The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (S-I-R) Program is a unique Fulbright Scholar Program initiative that is specifically driven by the goals of U.S. institutions of higher education to enhance internationalization efforts on their campuses. Through the S-I-R Program, institutions host a scholar from outside of the United States for a semester or full academic year to teach courses, assist in curriculum development, guest lecture, develop study abroad/exchange partnerships and engage with the campus and the local community. S-I-Rs work across departments and curricula in a variety of ways to significantly enhance or expand an existing international program, develop new world area studies programs, add an international dimension to existing coursework or provide an opportunity for U.S. students to learn about a particular world region or country.
  • The Fulbright Foreign Student Program
    The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is the largest Fulbright program with Africa and provides financial assistance for a maximum of two years of study toward a graduate degree in a U.S. university or for participation in a non-degree research or nonacademic professional program. It is designed primarily to strengthen African universities through higher degree training for faculty members. Applications are also accepted from prospective candidates in public and private educational and cultural institutions, independent research institutes, and professional institutions.
  • The Fulbright Specialist Program
    This program was initiated in 2001 to provide Fulbright grants of two to six weeks to qualified scholars to work with their professional counterparts at foreign academic institutions worldwide. The objective of the Fulbright Specialist Specialist Program is to avail scholarship and professional expertise to difficult to recruit disciplines such as marketing, hospitality, some medical specializations etc. for which the host institution has not been able to attract a lecturer for a full grant period, and to place Fulbright lectures at smaller or more isolated institutions where a regular Fulbright lecturer grant may not be feasible. To participate in the program, requesting institution is invited to apply through the Embassy specifying the expertise required and giving the name of the specialist, if one has been identified. The final selection of the specialist remains the responsibility of the Office of Academic Exchange of the State Department. There is no deadline for application.
  • The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant Program

    The Fulbright FLTA Program, an integral part of the Fulbright Student Program, funded by the U.S. Department of State, is a nine-month, non-degree program for early career English teachers teaching at college level or professionals in related fields. Fulbright FLTA participants have the opportunity to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and extend their knowledge of the society and culture of the United States, while being teaching assistants for their native language to U.S. students and strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities. The participants also interact with their host communities in conversation groups, extracurricular activities, and community outreach projects. The FLTA program promotes cross-cultural understanding in the U.S. and in the home countries of the FLTA fellows. U.S. universities benefit from the presence of a native speaker on their campuses. FLTA fellows provide teaching assistance, by serving in various capacities, which may include teaching up to two classes per semester, and typically facilitate cultural events, language clubs and language tables. FLTA fellows are required to enroll in at least two courses per semester. Fellows and U.S. students have a unique opportunity to learn about each other’s cultures and customs, and to build mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries. FLTA fellows must return to their home countries upon completion of the program.
  • Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA)

    The Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (TEA) brings outstanding non-U.S. secondary school teachers of English to the United States. Participants further develop expertise in their subject area, enhance their teaching skills and increase their knowledge about the United States. TEA teachers participate in a six-week academic program at a U.S. university graduate school of education.
