The U.S. Embassy has confirmed availability of seats on a UK charter flight leaving Tanzania on May 20. You may register for this flight using the online portal which has all the necessary information about the flight and can be accessed using this link: https://etm.eventsair.com/fcotanzania/tanzaniacharter929/Site/Register. The portal will close to registrations at 14:00 East Africa Time on Monday, May 18. Passengers will be required to book onward travel from London Heathrow and evidence of this will need to be presented at check-in. This is not a U.S. government operated or funded flight. Availability and cancellations are controlled by CTM. While additional flights may be available later, at this time this flight is the only known way to leave Tanzania. If you need to leave Tanzania, consider booking this flight now.
The Tanzanian government has not released any data on COVID in Tanzania since April 29, so there are no current data on the number of people diagnosed with COVID-19 in Tanzania.
The Department of State has issued a Global Level 4 Health Advisory for COVID-19. For emergency American Citizen Services, including emergency passports, please visit our website for additional information.
The risk of contracting COVID-19 in Dar es Salaam is extremely high. Despite limited official reports, all evidence points to exponential growth of the epidemic in Dar and other locations in Tanzania. The Embassy has strongly recommended that U.S. government personnel and their families remain at home except for essential activities (e.g., grocery shopping) and substantially limit into private homes the entry of anyone but regular residents.
Many hospitals in Dar es Salaam have been overwhelmed in recent weeks. Limited hospital capacity throughout Tanzania could result in life-threatening delays for medical care, including for those with COVID-19.
International commercial flight options no longer exist in Tanzania. The Government of Tanzania suspended all international scheduled and chartered passenger planes to Tanzania effective April 11.
U.S. citizens who remain in Tanzania should be prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. The U.S. government does not anticipate arranging additional repatriation flights in Tanzania at this time. However, in the event that opportunity becomes available, we are asking you to let us know if you are interested in being contacted. Please enter your information via the following link: bit.ly/USCitizenInfo and complete the form for each U.S. citizen or U.S. legal permanent resident guardian accompanying minor children in your family or group. If a repatriation flight is arranged, an email will be sent to anyone who submitted information via this form. If you have already submitted your information you do not need to submit your information again.
